Single Family Homes

Catholic Charities believes all people should have the opportunity to achieve the dream of home ownership. That is why we offer programs to teach families to build affordable homes of their own. Qualified families invest “sweat equity” during the construction process, which allows them to purchase a home with no money down and an affordable monthly payment. Catholic Charities Housing Services has purchased land in several communities to create single family housing developments for this program.

Single Family Cropped

Mutual Self-Help Program

CCHS has partnered with USDA RD’s Mutual Self-Help Program to provide opportunities for low-income families to build a home of their own at a cost they can afford. Individuals and families must meet the USDA program qualifications and participate in a build group of six to 12 families who build each other’s homes. This group works together on all the homes, and no one moves in until every family's home is complete. Families agree to dedicate 30 hours per week to the housing build until the homes are complete—usually a 9-to-12-month process. CCHS provides the technical assistance necessary for families to successfully build high quality, affordable homes.

Individual Self-Help Program

Working with eligible very low- to moderate-income families, CCHS provides an opportunity for families to build a home of their own with little money down. Families are required to contribute 250 hours of sweat equity in exchange for the money needed for closing costs, down payment assistance, and other tools to help put home ownership within reach.
