Annual Valentine Care Boxes Bring Cheer to Seniors

To help seniors remain in their homes safely and independently, Catholic Charities Senior Services provides volunteer support and help to seniors in Central Washington by offering help with simple chores, companionship programs, and transportation support. Recently, Senior Services lead Katrina Salisbury organized a St. Valentine’s Care Box Drive and was thrilled with the community support that made the project a huge success.

“It was really exciting to see everything come together,” Katrina reports. “The community was overwhelmingly supportive, and we were able to fill 83 boxes with non-perishable foods and hygiene items for local seniors.”

The event was truly a community project, with Yakima Valley Church providing manpower and storage space, St. Joseph/Marquette Middle School collecting many needed items, and students from Davis High School collecting items and delivering the boxes to the seniors. Several businesses also donated food, toothbrushes, and a sweet pillow animal in each box.

“It has been rewarding to watch this project turn out so well,” says Katrina. “We are already planning for next year, with a goal of filling and delivering 100 care boxes!”
