Nourishing Neighbors: How Local Support Made a Difference for CCHS Families

When the need is greatest, meaningful and timely support can change everything. The Safeway Foundation’s Nourishing Neighbors program offered relief and hope to families and individuals facing food insecurity, rising fuel costs, and an uncertain winter. Through their partnership with Catholic Charities Housing Services, 300 gift cards were distributed directly to CCHS residents across our housing communities; ensuring immediate access to essential resources during a critical time of need.

Behind every gift card is a story of resilience, gratitude, and the quiet strength it takes to care for a family when resources are limited.

At Blessed Kateri Village in Wapato, Maria and her family have been long‑time residents and deeply engaged members of the community. Over the years, Maria’s family has participated in onsite programs, community events, after‑school and summer programming activities, and a college tour experience. Maria is a stay‑at‑home mother devoted to caring for her children, while her husband works as the sole provider for the household. Like many families, they carefully stretch every dollar to meet their basic needs.

When Maria received a food gift card, she shared that it would be used for essential groceries and household cleaning supplies, items that are necessary for health and stability, yet often difficult to prioritize when finances are tight. This support brought meaningful relief, allowing Maria’s family to focus on their well‑being without the constant pressure of choosing between necessities. For families like theirs, contributions such as these provide more than food; they offer peace of mind and reinforce the sense that their community stands with them.

Mother Joseph Villa Apartments

At Mother Joseph Villa Apartments in Granger, the impact was just as meaningful. Sylvia, a mother of four, is currently unemployed and has been struggling to make ends meet. As she was handed her gift card, her face lit up with relief and gratitude. Every dollar matters, and the stress of providing for her family had been weighing heavily on her shoulders.

“This is going to help us buy groceries,” Sylvia shared, her words simple yet filled with emotion. In moments like these, even a small gesture becomes transformative. For Sylvia, the gift card was not only financial support; it was a reminder that she and her family were not alone.

These stories reflect the real impact of the Nourishing Neighbors program and their partnership with Catholic Charities Housing Services. By meeting residents where they are and addressing immediate needs, this support strengthens families, reinforces stability, and helps ensure that our communities remain places of care, connection, and hope. Through partnerships like this, CCHS continues its commitment to uplifting residents and providing meaningful assistance when it matters most.
