When Community Answers the Call: Standing with Mothers in Need
There is nothing like some Southern hospitality to get people talking and make things happen! That was the goal of “Sip & See,” an opportunity for Tri-Cities folks to gather and see how the PREPARES program has been impacting new moms and families in Central Washington.

Hosted by Syndee Cavazos, Program Manager for PREPARES and Parish Outreach, and her team, Sip & See was held on July 25th, at the lovely Layered Cake Artistry studio in Kennewick. Featuring elegant macarons, finger sandwiches, pecan pie and of course, tea, gave attendees the chance to experience a bit of Southern charm—and several people even dressed the part wearing their Sunday best and hats!
The 40 guests witnessed stories of how PREPARES has changed the lives of several young mothers in the community and they heard from Christina, one of the program Companions—volunteers who walk the parenting journey with PREPARES families. “This has been such a life changing experience,” she shared, “and I think I get as much from it as the mamas I companion.”

PREPARES is a statewide initiative created by the Bishops in Washington State. They recognized the need for more family support around pregnancy and early childhood. Parents need to feel connected and to be wrapped in meaningful relationships to be the best parents they can be and PREPARES Companions help provide these connections.
“PREPARES is more than a program; it’s a PROMISE,” Syndee explained to the guests. “Meeting a family’s essential needs isn’t just about providing diapers and baby clothing—it’s about providing stability, dignity, and peace of mind. For a parent in crisis, something as simple as a clean diaper or a safe place for their baby to sleep can be the difference between despair and hope. Providing these basic needs sends a powerful message: You are not alone. You are seen. You are supported. When families receive essential items like diapers, wipes, and safe sleep solutions—along with compassionate support—they experience more than relief. They experience a renewed sense of hope.

“In the last four years PREPARES has grown by 65% and expanded to seven counties in both urban and rural areas of Central Washington. Our growth in the number of families seeking support requires more baby essentials and diapers, a greater number of volunteers from all faith backgrounds, and additional monetary support.”
